Lash Lure (III)

For Riga Contemporary 2026, Kim? presents a new body of work by Latvian artist Indriķis Ģelzis, comprising two freestanding sculptures and a series of wall-based works that continue his exploration of how perception, infor- mation, and material form become intertwined. Spherical elements resembling eyes cluster into vertical, spine-like struc- tures, suggesting the gradual transformation of vision from an immediate and embodied experience into a structured, accumulated and constrained condition. Built from modular units that evoke bandages, patches or coded fragments, the sculptures oscillate between repair and mediation, reveal- ing perception as a process of continuous construction. Introducing square forms into his sculptural vocabulary for the first time, Ģelzis explores the point at which strict geometry begins to release some- thing unexpectedly animate. Rigid silver frameworks support softer, more fluid elements that bend outwards and unfurl. Spherical forms extend the recurring association made by the artist between the anatomy of the eye and lottery balls, linking perception with systems of chance, interpretation and uncertainty. Flower-like forms appear throughout the sculptures and wall works, oc- cupying an ambiguous space between petal and eyelash. Simultaneously blooming and blinking, they are painted black on one side and a contrast- ing colour on the other. The black surface functions like an eyelash – pro- tecting the eye while framing vision – while the coloured reverse suggests the traces left by encounters with the surrounding world, whether digital or tactile. Across the installation, Ģelzis translates memory, sensation and the circu- lation of information into a sculptural language of cutting, welding, bending and assembling. The act of seeing emerges as a material force that gradual- ly solidifies into internal frameworks, shaping both individual experience and shared realities. This series extends ideas developed for Sculpture Mil- waukee 2026, inviting viewers to reflect on how ways of seeing are formed, conditioned and ultimately embodied.
